Learning Outdoors
An important part of Westall Secondary College is our Outdoor Education Centre at Balook. Our camp is also available for bookings by other schools and members of the public. This page gives information about the camp environment and how bookings can be made.
The visit to Camp Balook gives a unique opportunity to experience activities not available at at school including:
- Learning of skills related to Mathematics, Science and Geography.
- Applying skills learnt in the classroom to the surroundings in which they apply.
- Becoming familiar with Australian plants, trees and animals.
Balook is 200 km south-east of the city of Melbourne in South Gippsland, midway between Traralgon and Yarram, in the Strzelecki Ranges. The area has many different animals and birds including lyre-birds, kookaburras, rosellas, echidnas, wombats, rabbits and wallabies.
The campsite occupies one hectare and is surrounded by the temperate rainforest of the Tarra Bulga National Park in the town of Balook. It is to the advantage of every body to visit and attend our Balook camp.

Tarra/Bulga National Park - Permanent Accommodation and Facilities
We are keen for people with disabilities to use this camp. There are steps to some of the buildings buildings.
- 42 bunks/beds in two cabins. Mattresses and pillows. Permanent heating in sleeping accommodation.
- Full kitchen facilities available for self-catering.
- Dining Room, separate Recreation Room. Open fire, 2 table tennis tables, billiard table, large screen for projection.
- Toilets, showers, washing & drying facilities.
- Outdoor Facilities include a covered gas BBQ and a separate open BBQ pit with octagonal surround seating.
- Resources nearby include Tarra Bulga National Park with walking tracks.
- There is an Information Centre only 400 m away.

Where is Camp Balook?
T
he Balook Campus is an accredited camp with the Australian Camps Association.
Balook is 35 km from the Traralgon railway station and 210 km from the Melbourne GPO. Transport can be made by arrangement with La Trobe Valley Buses to and from the campsite and nearby venues.

Balook is is available for hire on a nightly basis. The minimum hire charge is $120 per night. The camp is accredited with the Victorian Camping Association. There is strictly no smoking inside the camp buildings.
